Choosing a Stunt and Rescue Team

Imagine you’re at the movies watching an action thriller. The villain jumps from a burning building. A high-speed chase ensues, full of crashes and one near miss after another. One driver loses control and his vehicle spins through the air. Another ends up in a fiery crash.

But that’s all an illusion. Usually, the star of the show isn’t put in dangerous scenes. And the crashes and explosions are all carefully choreographed to minimize the risk to anyone’s life.

Whether you’re filming a shoot-out on top of a tall building, a car crash, or an explosion, it’s vital that you work with experts who can ensure the crew and talent have a safe working environment. It takes a professional team to make sure the final result is an exciting stunt performed safely and within budget.

At M3 Studios, we have an experienced stunt and rescue team ready to help you plan and execute the stunts you need for your production.

Some of the experts on our stunts rescue team include:

      Stunt Coordinator

A Stunt Coordinator arranges the casting and performance of stuntmen. This is the person who selects the stunt performers and stunt doubles. The Stunt Coordinator often develops the budgets for the stunts, as well as designing the choreography and any needed stunt equipment. Most Stunt Coordinators have experienced stunt performers and stuntmen, so they have a deep understanding of how to pull off convincing and exciting stunts safely.

Before filming can begin, the Stunt Coordinator spends weeks or even months planning and preparing. They perform many of the same tasks as a second unit producer or director, spending much time in meetings and reviewing documents to make sure all the necessary details have been nailed down.

These include providing oversight to the customization or fabrication of vehicles, purchasing explosives or blank ammo, and making sure that all logistics have been thought through. During filming, they are in the center of the action to make sure the stunts are captured on film and the cast, crew, and equipment are safe.

Stunt Coordinators must be able to clearly communicate with other members of the production team. Everyone needs to know what actions are required for the stuntmen to perform the stunt. They also need to be clear on any possible outcomes of the stunt.

This communication is key to making sure everyone knows where to be and what to do at any time during the stunt. It’s the best tool stunt coordinator use to minimize the risk of injury to actors and crew and damage to sets.

      Stunt Performer

Sometimes called a Stuntman, the stunt performer does what the name says. He or she performs the stunts when dangerous or specialized actions are called for by the script. When the stunt performers or Stuntmen take the place of an actor, they are sometimes called stunt doubles.

Film or television stunt performers train in several different areas. This includes many forms of martial arts and stage combat. Not only do the Stuntmen have to execute the fight moves in a way that appears authentic, they also need to be able to create the illusion of either striking their opponent or having been struck by the other person.

Other training might involve performing high falls, shooting guns with blanks, Squib hits, weapons wrangling, performing stunts involving burns or full body burns, the use of equipment necessary for performing stunts at great heights, just to name a few.

The training helps them to break down and plan an action sequence and to physically prepare themselves. If the stunt performer is working as a stunt double, they must also be able to mimic the style of movement of the actor they are standing in for. And most of all, they must be able to anticipate safety and risk concerns.

Many stunt performers specialize. Some do everything from fighting to shortfalls. Others focus on any stunt that uses machinery to perform the stunt, such as high wire work or High falls. Still others do stunts involving animals or vehicles, such as cars, boats, and airplanes.

Even when stunts are planned and executed well, there is still the risk of strain or unplanned injury. This is why most studios require that the stunt performers are certified members of a professional stunt performers organization and that they have the necessary insurance to cover stunt-related injuries.

      Car Stunts

Process Trailer Driving, car crashes, high-speed chases, or spectacular jumps and spins all create excitement in action films. These stunts require careful planning, choreography, and vehicle modification and custom fabrication to pull off so that the result is thrilling, authentic and was performed safely. We’ve helped many productions film exciting car stunts and understand what it takes to get them done safely and within budget.

      Stunt Driver/Precision Driver

To perform car stunts safely, it goes without saying an experienced driver is a must. But is it worth paying extra for a great stunt driver?

Undoubtedly, yes. The best stunt drivers are consistent. This means they can perform the stunt correctly every time, and they do it exactly the same way every time without damaging the vehicle or any nearby property or endangering any cast or crew on set.

This saves a lot of time and money since there will be fewer retakes required. Because the stunt is performed a fewer number of times, the risk of accidents is less, and the cost of production is too. Which means there is a lower risk of injury to the cast and crew and damage to the sets.

Some stunt drivers are called precision drivers. This means they can hold the car at high rates of speed in a given position or slide the car in the same exact angle repeatedly. These skills help the director and camera operators get their shots as quickly as possible, again saving time which in turns means lower production costs.

Before hiring any stunt driver, it’s important to take a look at their resume and watch some video of them performing stunts. Your Stunt Coordinator can help you choose the best Stuntmen who have the proper skills and skill level for the stunts that need to be performed.

      Marine Coordinator

Performing stunts in or underwater can be more complicated than stunts on land. They can become extremely dangerous in the blink of an eye. This is why expert Marine Coordinators are vital for a smooth and safe shoot. A Marine Coordinator’s job is to synchronize the people, props, and equipment that make water scenes possible in feature films, television programs, documentaries, and commercials.

Just like Stunt Coordinators, Marine Coordinators spend weeks, if not months, planning and preparing for the shoot. Before filming can begin, they make certain that all the necessary details have been nailed down and documented. When filming begins, the Marine Coordinators are in the thick of the action, making sure the stunts go smoothly and everyone is safe.

Some of the ways marine coordinators help are by assisting in choosing water locations. They also determine equipment and personnel requirements for the shoot and monitor tide and weather information as it impacts the shoot. Marine Coordinators also help to train your cast and crew how to stay safe while shooting, informing them potential dangers to avoid while shooting in the water, on the surface of the water, under water or near water.

Marine coordinators also help locate vessels and crews and help design the modifications and custom fabrication to those vessels as needed. They also supervise the design and construction of sets and equipment. As with stunt coordinators, marine coordinators help get the shoot done safely and within budget.

      Water Safety Coordinator

The safe performance of water stunts requires consultation with a Marine Coordinator or Water Safety Coordinator. Water stunts can take place in oceans, lakes, rivers, pools or ponds. These different bodies of water present their own unique challenges.

The water safety coordinator works with the marine coordinator, the stunt coordinator, stunt performers and other crew to make sure that the stunts can be performed safely. Water stunts can be especially difficult to coordinate and control. Knowledge of the special challenges performing a stunt on or under the water is vital for any water safety coordinator.

One major challenge is that water vehicles have no brakes, so there is no way to slow down if something with the stunt goes wrong. This means that the stunt coordinator must fully understand how the craft handles at different speeds and different angles and make sure the stunt pilots have the same understanding.

Educating the cast and crew is also a big part of keeping everything safe. Just as people walk into a pool or off a dock into the ocean while walking or texting, little issues can turn into major problems in just seconds when people aren’t paying attention to details. Proper training from people who know where the problems can happen is a must.

      Underwater Production Service

Performing a stunt underwater adds a whole new layer of complexity and risk to the stunt. Experienced underwater production services can help you plan, choreograph and execute your underwater stunts safely. They will also have the proper equipment for shooting and rescue services on hand.

In addition, they will work with your talent to make them feel comfortable in the water. For some, this is just training and educating them regarding what they need to do to perform the stunts and about the inherent dangers involved. For others who don’t know how to swim or are afraid of the water, the training will help them overcome these issues.

      Fight Choreography

Without good choreography, fight scenes can fall flat. Fights that are too slow, for example, don’t create the sense of thrill and danger fight scenes are meant to evoke.

Fight choreographers make sure that fight scenes are believable, memorable and thrilling. The idea is to create the illusion of physical combat without inflicting any harm on the performers.

Good fight choreographers must know different fighting styles from a variety of martial arts disciplines: boxing, Jiu-Jitsu, karate, kendo, wrestling, and aikido, just to name a few. Some fight choreographers also study sword fighting, Kobudo weapons training, fencing, and gymnastics.

      Wire Work

We’ve all thrilled to see people flying through the sky, jumping and flipping over exploding cars, or leaping from one rooftop to the next. These stunts add drama to the production, giving fans the thrills they paid for and the excitement that keeps them coming back.

All these stunts are made possible through the miracles of wire work. This technique uses high strength wires and harnesses to support and move the stunt performers, creating the illusion of flight or free falls.

The wire rigging systems help tell the story in a more realistic way than using any other stunt technique. Our experienced team can help you use this new technique to create more spectacular stunts for your production.

      Stunt Rigging

Rigging wires for stunts is a complex, time consuming and expensive process. This is why it’s necessary to hire experienced professionals to get the job done safely in a timely manner. The whole idea of the rigging is to make dangerous and difficult stunts safe.

Manual and computerized high-speed winch systems permit the stunt coordinators to repeat stunts with the same exact timing every time. This helps directors to get precisely the shots they want in the fewest number of retakes.

      Weapons

By their very nature, weapons can cause great harm to cast and crew. Which is why it’s vital that you choose experienced professionals who can help you plan your stunt, procure the weapons and any needed ammunition, and train everyone involved in proper safety measure.

Many filmmakers forget that not every actor has experience handling a weapon. Which is why it’s a good idea to make sure they receive the proper training in how to properly handle the weapon safely.

Procuring the weapons is a task that expert assistance can make easier. This is true whether you need swords, weapons that fire blanks, blank ammo or squibs.

      Process Trailer Driving and Rigging

If your script calls for the actors to speak while driving a car, then you’ll probably need a process trailer. This allows for the vehicle the actors are in to be towed, allowing the talent to concentrate on speaking, rather than driving.

Process trailers can be dangerous. Experienced process trailer drivers can make sure the rigging is done correctly, and that all cast and crew are briefed on safety procedures before the shot begins.

      Simulated Explosions

Explosions can provide some of the most exciting moments of a film. They can also be dangerous to film. Again, experienced professionals can plan the explosion, knowing the proper amount of explosive, timing, and equipment needed. The pyrotechnic crew will set up the explosion and will also be able to brief everyone involved on safety procedures.

      Burns and Fires

If fire is involved in your scene, you know it’s going to be dangerous to shoot. Whether your script calls for a full body burn, simulated fires or controlled burns and fires, you’ll need an expert to guide you.

Typically, these scenes are carefully planned. Experts are needed to determine the amount of and type of flammable agents to be used, the length of time the fires are allowed to burn, and other details. All cast and crew need to be trained in safety measures. Experienced professionals can help make sure your burn scenes are shot as safely as possible.

      Finding the Best Stunt Team

All you need to have a smooth and safe shoot is a team of experienced experts who take the business of stunts seriously. The ones who know it’s not just about creating the most amazing stunts or gigantic explosions, but the ones who know how to manage the budget, time and risk.
